Cats and their emotional support items of trash that their humans are not allowed to throw out, ever: 'That trash has been there for two months because the cat likes to sit on it'

Oh- that? That trash is the cat's trash.

One thing that we have learned very quickly after becoming cat owners is that while cats are very regal meowjestic creatures, they are not interested in the finer things in life. They don't care about fancy cat trees. Cats like sitting in the boxes that the trees came in. Cats may appreciate extra fluffy cat beds sometimes, but cats also like napping on plants and egg cartons and other incredibly uncomfortable places. Cats don't care about fancy, expensive, high-tech toys. Cats like playing with the hairband that you dropped on the floor and has been kicked under the couch 14 weeks ago.

Of course, you, as a cat owner, are at first disappointed that they don't appreciate the money that you spend on them, and then you simply realize that… you don't need to spend it. All you need is to watch your cats and let them tell you what they like to play with and lie on. It's easy. And if that means living with an extensive collection of trash littering your house, well… that's the cat's trash. If the cat likes it, then it stays.

The boxes that are thrown all around the house, we think, are a universal experience. Not all cats love boxes, but if you have one of the cats that do, then your house will look like a recycling bin sooner rather than later. We simply cannot say no to our cats. If they like something, we keep it. And maybe you're lucky, and your cat only has those one or two boxes that it loves, but more likely, every box that gets into your house becomes your cat's new favorite, and you, looking at that adorable innocent creature sitting in that square, cannot say no to keeping box number 58.

Some people may look at this and think that this is an exaggeration, but it is not. It could literally be a piece of trash that your cat gets attached to. A piece of plastic wrapping that crinkles purrfectly when the cat touches it. Or one of our favorites - our cat loves grape vines. Not the actual grapes. She has no interest in the grapes. She likes the stem of the grapevine, after all the grapes have been removed. Our lazy cat, who doesn't play with literally anything, goes crazy for those grapevine stems, and yes, we have a couple of those lying around the living room basically all throughout the year.
